Back at the start of September, we had the pleasure of welcoming a lovely group of thirteen students from Oberlin University in Japan. As part of their visit, they will be completing sixteen hours of outreach work which will not only help the community but will also help to improve their English. They have already become an integral part of LSI/IH Portsmouth and have contributed to a welcoming, friendly atmosphere in the school and on the social programme.
They were lucky enough to be invited by Wynelle at City Life Church to meet the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth for a traditional dinner of fish and chips, along with a tour of Portsmouth Guildhall. Portsmouth has had a sister link with Maizuru, a thriving port city situated in the North Kyoto district of Japan, since 1998!
The Lord Mayor will be visiting Maizuru in October and wanted to meet with and talk to our Japanese students to help him prepare. He even practised speaking a little Japanese!
The tour with the Mayor included lots of information and they were able to visit the Council chamber and the Lord Mayor’s parlour (usually closed to the public)! This was a fantastic opportunity for the students from Oberlin University and they represented Japan very positively.
