Learn English in Portsmouth with our Full-Time General English Courses
Our full time General English course focuses largely on grammar in the morning class and skills, such as speaking and listening, as well as everyday English, in the afternoon classes. Throughout the day you will have the opportunity to widen your vocabulary and improve your pronunciation.

- 22.5 hours (60 minutes) per week, plus 5-10 hours self-access

The main focus of the General English course is on communication, with plenty of opportunity to practice using new grammar and vocabulary. Lessons are dynamic, with a variety of activities and we encourage pair-work and discussion to improve your fluency and confidence. Lessons focus on grammar and vocabulary in the morning, with lots of spoken practice and an opportunity to improve your skills. You’ll also learn English for ‘everyday situations’ in your first afternoon class, with lots of speaking, listening and pronunciation practice. A chance to learn useful phrases will really increase your confidence in real-life social situations. We will give you an English Course book, supplemented with authentic material, which is included in your course fee.
You will be given a test and a tutorial with your teacher at least once every 2 weeks, as well as regular homework, so you can monitor your progress during your language stay here in Portsmouth.

12.00 – 13.15: Lunch/Optional supervised self-access
13.15 – 14.30: Everyday English functions
14.30 – 14.45: Afternoon coffee break
14.45 – 16.00: Everyday English themes speaking/listening
16.00 – 17.30: Optional supervised self-access
There are no lessons on Friday afternoons, so you are free to do additional supervised self-study.
Alternatively you may like to do additional 1:1 lessons to focus on specialist areas of your language studies (at an extra cost).
- Friday afternoons
During your stay in Portsmouth, you may want to live with a local homestay family, in one of our self-catering residences, or choose to find your own accommodation. We will do everything we can to give you the best option to suit your needs and to help and support you with your living arrangements.
The social programme we offer is full and varied, and includes weekly sporting events, parties and nights out, and cultural and educational activities. Just some of the after school activities we offer include football with our teachers, volleyball, conversation club, afternoon tea, karaoke nights, international parties and visits to local restaurants and pubs. Our social programme is always changing, and is tailored to meet the needs of all students.
