How to Improve Your English Vocabulary

On your language course at LSI/IH Portsmouth, you will come across lots of useful phrases, expressions and vocabulary, language which you will, of course, wish to use in the future. So, what is the best way to record this language so that you can access it easily in the future?

One of the best ways is to group your language by subject matter. So, for example on one page, you might want to have all language associated with restaurants, on another page sport, on another page your job etc. How to note this language down is up to you, but two of the best ways are the following:

  1. Write contextual sentences. Writing down lists of words seldom helps you to remember them. Most words only make sense when joined with other words to make a longer piece of language. If you are not sure how your new vocabulary fits into a sentence then look at example sentences in a good dictionary or online. After you’ve noted down the new word, make sure you highlight the word so that you can see it more clearly.
  2. Make a mind map. Write the ‘subject’ word in the centre of a page, circle it and see how many words you can link to it. After that think of other words that you can link to your first group of words. Very quickly you will build up a large amount of new language. The good thing about this method is that you can continuously add to the mind map as you discover new words.
