The University of Portsmouth, together with LSI Portsmouth, offers a composite programme of English language university preparation plus Undergraduate or Postgraduate study under the single sponsorship of the University.

If you are over 18 years of age and meet the academic requirements for admission to one of the following programmes:

  • Foundation Programme: Year 0
  • Foundation Degree
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Pre-Master’s Programme
  • Master’s Degree
  • Research Degree

and you have at least IELTS 4.0 with no element below 4.0 (subject to the University course you wish to study), you may qualify to receive an unconditional offer for study and gain direct progression to your university course, on successful completion of your Pre-Sessional English programme.

You can apply to follow one of the combined programmes if:

  • You hold a conditional offer for a degree course at Portsmouth, but have not yet met the English language standard for direct entry and you have a current Secure English Language Test (SELT) certificate at the minimum required level for acceptance onto the Pre-Sessional English course.
  • You can satisfy all academic conditions for entry to one of the University of Portsmouth degree courses, and you have a current SELT certificate at the minimum required level for acceptance onto the Pre-Sessional English course.

Additional Entry Requirements

  • Visas

    Students with a Conditional Offer from the University of Portsmouth and attending 4-week, 8-week or 12-week PSE courses (PSE A, PSE B, PSE C) may apply for a Composite Unconditional Offer, whcih will allow them to be sponsored by the University for visa purposes. This means that students will receive one visa covering both the Pre-Sessional and Academic programmes. Students will not have to renew their visas on entering their Academic Programme.

    Students going on to ICP or attending 25-week or 18-week Pre-Sessional Courses (EPSE 1, EPSE 2) will be sponsored by LSI Portsmouth and will apply for their visa under LSI Portsmouth's Confirmation of Acceptance for Study (CAS); they will need to return home upon successful completion of their pre-sessional programme and apply for a new visa under ICP or the University of Portsmouth's sponsorship. 

    Students from visa-required countries will need to apply for a visa at their local UK Embassy visa office. In order for you to apply for the visa, you will need a CAS number, which the University of Portsmouth will issue you for your combined Pre-Sessional English and Degree Programme, and which LSI Portsmouth will issue if your Pre-Sessional Course is longer than 12 weeks.  In order to issue you a CAS, you will need to send the following:

    - A copy of your passport
    - A copy of your current Secure English Language Test (SELT) certificate
    - A copy of your University of Portsmouth or ICP offer letter
    - Proof of payment of the tuition fees for your course

  • Language Levels

    Due to UK visa regulations, no student may apply for a Pre-Sessional Course if any aspect (speaking, listening, reading or writing) of their English language level is below CEFR B1 (defined as IELTS 4.0).

    8 week and 12 week PSE courses
    No more than ONE element may be up to a maximum of one full band below the entry level required for the PSE course and acceptance of students with this type of spiked profile is at the discretion of LSI.

    18 week and 25 week EPSE courses
    No element may be more than 0.5 bands below the entry level required for the EPSE course.
