What is it like to prepare for a Cambridge exam online? More and more students are choosing to prepare for their exams through the Internet. In this article, we will look at the experiences of one of our students and one of our teachers.
Rebecca, Benoit, and their online Cambridge exams class
We caught up with both Rebecca and Benoit, her CPE student, to find out more about what they are doing in class and what their experience of preparing for a Cambridge course online has been so far.
Rebecca – Teacher
Rebecca is a very experienced and qualified teacher!
- She began teaching English language in 1997.
- She has been an assessor for Cambridge Exams.
- She knows what it is like to be a student as she speaks fluent Italian and French!
- She is a very qualified teacher! She has a CELTA and DELTA
- She is a published author! Her work “Practical (h)ELP: a teacher’s guide to using the EAQUALS-ALTE ELP” was published by EAQUALS (The European Association for Quality Language services).
Due to her experience teaching, Rebecca has taught a wide variety of different courses at LSI/IH Portsmouth, but in particular she specialises in Cambridge Exam preparation, 30+, Business English and OET preparation. She joined LSI/IH Portsmouth in 2016 after she moved back to the UK from Italy.
What happens inside an online Cambridge exams class?
The content of an online Cambridge class is essentially very similar to a live classroom lesson. Each class has a balance of skills practice combined with exam techniques, so students work on Reading, Use of English, Writing, Listening and Speaking as well as developing their grammar, vocabulary, fluency and confidence.
How is it working with Benoit?
Working with Benoit is a great experience and from a didactic perspective, it’s really successful. I like being able to give instant feedback and it’s extremely rewarding to see Ben’s progress each day as he uses new language that he has learned in previous lessons. We work on all the varied topics that the exam covers but also spend time broadening the scope and talking, reading, or listening about current affairs and topics of interest, which all goes to help with confidence, accuracy and fluency. He’s the perfect student!

Hello everyone, it’s Ben from Switzerland, today I am doing this video from England to speak to all the students who would like to join online lessons with LSI/IH Portsmouth. I have been studying at LSI/IH Portsmouth for more than 3 months now and been taking online lessons for 5 weeks after the lock-down was declared in the UK in order to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.
Since the beginning of the crisis, I have been following the CPE individual online lesson and I would say that the first advantage of having lessons online is that the accent is put on speaking. Indeed with the fact that you don’t really work on written exercises during your lessons you will probably ask to talk about interesting topics which will require you to speak and give your opinion.
I know that speaking in a language that we don’t really master can be terrifying, however I can tell you from my own experience that its the best way to improve and keep your English up. As in life invest yourself in what you are doing and you will get quick results. Then admittedly online lessons are not the best way to create social contacts and meet new people, however its the best alternative in this situation and to be honest with you there is nothing better than studying like this while being at home in your own comfort zone.
In other words, the only things that you need is a good internet connection, a laptop, and something to take notes. Moreover, you can organise yourself as you want to achieve your goals in learning English. And just enjoy your time from your country without leaving your family and friends. I sincerely hope that you will take part in the online lessons provided by LSI/IH Portsmouth and I wish you all the best in learning English. It’s such a wonderful experience.
